Yearbook

Students will understand the basics of digital photography including composition, motion, light and aesthetics. They will learn how to use a DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses. They will learn how to take portrait pictures, landscapes, close-ups, studio pictures, and merchandise photos. Students will master the photo program Lightroom to edit their photos.

While mastering these skills, students in this class will be creating the Yearbook for HomeTech Charter School… the memory record that tells “our story” for the school year. Students learn:

  • To choose a design “theme” for the year and plan the yearbook
  • Basic elements of design layout
  • Journalism ethics and copyright
  • How to work with an online program to create the yearbook
  • Meeting deadlines for publication and effective teamwork
  • Editing and proofing strategies
  • Marketing and distribution of the school yearbook
  • Planning and facilitate the Yearbook Signing Parties at the end of the school year.

Ceramics

  • 1-year Elective course
  • Appropriate for grades 7-12
  • Maximum of 12 students per section
  • Course is 2 hours per day - 2 days per week
  • Monday-Wednesday section: 1-3pm
  • Tuesday-Thursday section: 1-3pm
  • Attendance is mandatory
  • No pre-requisites

INTRO TO ART

This course is a graduation requirement, but students may take it as an elective if they have already met the Fine Arts requirement for graduation from High School.

  • 1-year long course
  • Appropriate for grades 9 through 12

Fitness

Move your body in a variety of fun ways that will increase your strength, agility, and energy level. A variety of different activities will engage your entire body in dynamic ways, such as yoga, gymnastics, weight bearing exercises, and many more. No prior exercise experience is necessary, only a willingness to participate and a desire to move! The instructor has been playing sports her whole life and likes to exercise in a variety of ways.

HTC COOKING

Learn to cook a variety of delicious and healthy foods. Each class will involve the preparation of a new dish by following recipes, as well as experimenting with cooking without a structured recipe. Everyone will be involved in the classroom cooking process and will be asked to further their experience by preparing similar foods at home. If you enjoy eating good food and are interested in learning more about food preparation, this class will be fun for you! The instructor has worked in a variety of restaurants preparing food and enjoys eating well and cooking.

Math Skills: Basic Skills 

This class provides instruction and review of the basic math skills that each student needs to be successful in Algebra and beyond. The focus of the class is to assess each student individually, help the student to fill in any math “gaps” they need to learn, and to encourage each student to succeed in math.

ENGLISH SKILLS: BASIC SKILLS

This class provides instruction and review of basic English language and grammar skills. Skills that each student needs to be successful in learning. The focus of the class is to assess each student individually, help the student to fill in any “gaps”, focus on improving reading comprehension and writing skills, and to encourage each student to succeed.

Robotics

  • 1-year elective course
  • Appropriate for grades 7 through 12
  • Course is 2 hours, 1 day per week
  • Friday 9-11am

Students must be motivated self-learners capable of running trial and error tests to attain a working robotic program. Although this course uses Lego robotics, the main emphasis of this course is programming, not robot building. Space is limited by the number of robotics sets and the number of laptops available. Maximum of 18 students. 

BEG GUITAR

Beginning guitar is designed for students who have never touched a guitar or who have just started to play. The class starts with learning the parts of a guitar and how to tune it. Students will learn chord forms on the guitar and how to transition between them to play some simple songs. More difficult chords and songs will be introduced as students advance in their skills. Guitar theory will be introduced throughout the course.

Success Classes

For any student in need of additional support with any subject and/or packets, there are several blocks of time throughout the week where they can come to school and receive help from a teacher.

LIFE MANAGEMENT

This course is all about you and the important decisions you make. It’s also about having the correct information before making those decisions. We’ll deal with real issues like nutrition, substance abuse, coping with stress and mental health.

Good health is both mental and physical. Making good decisions starts with knowing the facts, understanding the consequences, and having the confidence to choose well. Every week you'll listen to different professionals about real issue topics and have the opportunity to right down your feelings on a particular topic. The first week of every month we will meet at HomeTech and go out to eat to talk about what we've learned throughout the month ( this is not mandatory).

CRAFTS AND GAMES

This course is designed to give students an overview of different games ... In this class we will play a wide variety of different types of games to widen the students horizon and occasionally do a fun craft.
